Ghana National Association for the Deaf’s is testing their Sign Language Empowerment Program to address the root causes of bullying among young deaf people 10-24 years old by promoting a safe, inclusive environment where they feel safe, respected, and protected. The initiative will reach young people who are deaf and hard of hearing in five schools for the deaf in Ghana.

The program empowers students to discuss mental health effectively in Sign Language, assert their rights, and report bullying with confidence through:

  • Confidential and accessible reporting channels, ensuring Deaf students have a trusted space to speak out and seek help when facing bullying.
  • Sign Language Mastery Workshops for Deaf and hard of hearing students, which promote advanced communication skills related to mental health and bullying.
  • Anti-bullying awareness campaigns delivered entirely in Ghanaian Sign Language at schools.
  • Young Deaf Mentorship Circles for peer support and guidance, provided by 100 trained anti-bullying youth ambassadors
  • Referral of young deaf people who experience anxiety, depression, or low self-esteem to trained intermediaries.
